Like most of us, we have one restaurant that stands above all others, our #1 Go To restaurant. We love that restaurant because it is cozily familiar, provides great service, and, above all, serves superb food. My #1 Go To restaurant for lunch—d no not Cactus—Joe Fortes. Their prix fixe lunch menu is my absolute favorite in terms of value. Two courses for -$14.95 or three courses for $17.95 is a steal for the high quality of seafood served. Available 11 – 4PM Monday thru Friday.

It took me less than 2 seconds to sell my friends on this deal.

We started off with our appies. The hefty portion of Mixed Greens Drizzled With a light Balsamic Vinaigrette was crisp and refreshing, unlike crappy restaurants where thegreens are drowning in dressing and taste like gooey slop over ripe green mush. – Pretty appetizing isn’t it?

The cup of clam chowder was a little smaller, not too rich, and had the right creamy consistency. Whole pieces of clam, bacon and thyme.

For our entrées my friends ordered the Maple Glazed Wild Salmon with Roasted Potatoes. The subtle smoky maple flavor gave it an extra layer of flavor.

The Shrimp Linguine with Basil Marinara Sauce was simple, too simple. The dish needed a spark of creativity that was missing. No cheaping out on the shrimp though. I split it with my friend, so double the picture below to get the true portion size.

To finish off, we all ordered the Vanilla Crème Brulée with Caramel Sauce. After my friend Soph, announced she was too full to possibly have another bite, she proceeded to attack the dessert voraciously, finishing it in record time. Apparently, it was that good!

Salam Bombay Menu

If you failed to make reservations for a sunny Friday lunch, you can forget about it, all the usual  “hot spots” restaurants will be full till at least 1PM. After our 3rd failed attempt, we decided to trek upstairs to Salam Bombay and as we guessed they had a few extra tables available.

Till of late, I have yet to hear anyone rave about the quality and creativity of food from “All You Can Eat” restaurants, this one is no exception. All you can eat for $15. It was authentically western, with all your typical western choices from the luke warm butter chicken. As my co-workers (Yes, I do have a REAL job) unanimously agreed it lacked the layers of spices and lacked the smoky flavour. It was also noted that 90% of the lunch patrons were not of indian discent, they would probably roll their eyes of at what is being passed as “contemporary indian cuisine”.

The mixed vegetables were unaspring. The veggies were overdone to the point that it looked like green sludge dorwning in curry.

I usually love paneer but this was too heavy to my liking and after my 5th spoonful I felt like I just gained 3lbs.

It would not be an Authentically Western Indian all you can eat if there was no beef curry! Eh, just look at the pic, does that look appealing?

On a uplifting note, hte service was attentive and friendly. They were more than courteous when asked to define menu items. The setting was birght, clean and comfortably spacious. I would go back if I am ever stupid enough to fail to book reservations for Friday’s lunch and perhaps try their dishes off the “All You Can Eat” menu.

It must be the pull of their large and always packed patio that drew us to Don Guacamole’s or, their guacamole dip in a martini glass. Whatever the reason, we were ready to explore Robson’s version of a Red Hot Mexican meal.

Starting off with a complimentary side of tortillas that comes with 3 dipping sauces. None, all too spicy.

Tortilla Chips

The best value and my recommendation are the Tortilla appetizers $2.75/ each, it is equally as big as the tortillas sized entrees. We ordered the Birria, slow cooked lamb with as their menu terms it a “unique” mexican sauce.  Really just a bunch of chillies, we started adding the dip from our chips to add extra flavour to a rather much too simple dish.

Birria

For the entree we ordered the Mulitas Campachenas – corn tortillas, ground beef and mexican sausage and guacamole -$10, it comes with two tortillas.  This turned out a little dry, added a spritz of lime, extra gucamole and salsa which turned out great.

Mulitas

Gauging from my foodie co-horts this place is a hit or miss, depending when you go, the line-ups are always long and whether their cook is on the ball when he made your dish. For that reason and the fact that I was my own sit-down chef I am not persuaded.
