Fable Kitchen – Top Chef Canada Runner Up Trevor Bird

Appies

Canned Tuna – preserved lemon, salt canned in-house  Fable Kitchen’s server rightly described it as “The best canned tuna you’ll ever eat” and, she’s right. It was bit on the heavier side but, the flavours were creative blended well together.

Canned Tuna

Chickpea fritters, pickled red onion, shoots, curry mayo. This was good but not the highlight 3/5

Spaghetti and meatball, Duck meat ball, tagliatelle, mushroom sauce in the middle. 5/5. I rarely give 5 ‘s but, this dish deserved it. I understand why they made this an appie instead of an entrée, it is very heavy. My friend remarked, if he could dunk his head in this  it’ll be the best thing EVER.

Entrees

Duck Breast, scallion pierogi, fiddle heads, cauliflower. 4.5/5

Duck

Steak, an asian inspired sauce, ginger, black bean, soy sauce. 4/5
Steak

Potato Crusted Chicken and ratatouille. The crust had an interesting texture, reminded me of potato hasbrowns from McDonald’s. It’s not a bad thing just different. Chicken itself was tender. 4/5

Featured Entrée Slow cooked local salmon with Gnocchi, kale, leeks, spinach puree. The gnocchi was doughy and dense. The salmon was good, the dish other aside from the gnocchi was executed nicely. 3/5

Deer Garden Signature – Richmond’s Fave Noodle House

Deer Garden a popular Chinese noodle house in Richmond is almost always packed. They are known for their steaming hot flavorful bowls of noodles and their very low prices.

I am a sucker for steaming bowls of noodles and, usually it’s the main reason why I would be in Richmond. I have yet to find a comparable of noodle house outside of Richmond.

Reputed grilled beef tongue – so tender, I would absolutely re-order this dish. Pan fried and sprinkled with salt & pepper. $6.95 4.5/5. Not for the squeamish, you cannot mistake this body part, it’s a tongue you are eating.

Grilled Beef Tongue

Fish filet, crispy and hot on the outside and flaky on the inside. Reminded of something you can eat at PNE. 3/5

Breaded fish filet

You can select from a selection of soups and toppings. Their signature fish soup is their best seller.

Fish puffs squid, vermicelli 7.95. I’ve been to so hot pot and cattle café, also in Richmond, and Deer Garden beats it out of the park. The broth was not as oily as some places and the portions were huge, I had two dinners out of this dish. Loved that it came out steaming hot, unfortunately, I was impatient and greedy and burnt my tongue. 4.5/5

Chinese Creamy fish broth noodle soup

Fish broth with veggies, pig’s blood and fish balls. Alright, I was never a fan of chunks of stewed blood. The broth was the same as the previous dish, not much different than the previous dish.

Cibo Trattoria – Best Ravioli

Italian Fine Dining in the heart of Vancouver downtown. Serving traditional tasty Italian dishes.

The room makes me think of Whistler, gleaming wood and fireplace lighting with glamorous chandeliers hanging from their tall ceilings.

My weekend dinners are late in the evening and, by the time I’m about to eat I am lightheaded from starvation. I attacked the cheese bread like the first day after a no-carb diet.

Chicken Liver Toscana, it was tasty but, the slabs of pickles made it too sour. I would have preferred if it was served on something more inspiring than two pieces of toast. 3/5

One of my favourite ingredients is pumpkin. That being said, I’ve tried so many pumpkin dishes that I know when a dish fails to meet my crazy expectations. This Pumpkin Ravioli passed my test. The pumpkin really came through and it was so creamy 4/5

Roast suckling pig, Very moist and tender I love the mint. The rosemary however was overpowering. 3/5

Roast ling cod, well prepared but the dish fell flat. It was too simple and lacked the layers of flavor found in our other dishes. 2.5/5

Frankie’s Italian Kitchen & Bar – Simple and Tasty Italian, Best Value Downtown

Frankies Bar

We were seated in the dining section for a late lunch. Sadly, other than us there was one other patron. The room was nice and spacious. The service was friendly and, the food was simple and good dishes. It reminded me of home cooked Italian dinners.

Frankies

Bolognaise pasta – it was very good, and the sauce was not overly salty as with many pasta dishes.

We both enjoyed the seafood risotto, with prawns, scallop and, the risotto was perfectly cooked and the then creamy tomato based sauce was rich and flavorful.

Overall, the price was very pretty decent for portion and the quality. Actually, it may be the best value Italian food you can find downtown Vancouver, even without our discount.  We ended using a Frankie’s promotional flyer at a $20 discount.

I would absolutely recommend this restaurant for lunch.
