As we walked through the grand Metropolitan Hotel lobby into the Diva at the Met we were met with soaring ceilings and an impeccable mannered greeting. Hello, Ms Lau, how are you this afternoon? Your table of 12 is ready, I can take your jacket for you.” First off, how did she know my name??

Most of us ordered the 3 course prix fixe lunch menu -$28

Amuse bouche- parsnip pancetta with a little bit of maple syrup. This received mixed reviews, some like the parsnip flavor some don’t, I frankly, thought it was too sweet.

We received a nice assortment of breads, crackers.

Smoked Salmon Sausage with pea and risotto croquette drizzled with caviar dressing. We all loved the salmon sausage. It was so flavorful and it was so soft it just dissolved in my mouth.

Pan roasted duck with trumpet mushrooms, butternut squash pea and onion croquettes, butternut squash purée and hazelnut brown butter sauce. Overall, this was a decent dish but, nothing really stood out. I expected a lot more from the Diva, the highly rated fine dining restaurant.

Yes, it was one my birthday celebrations. The espresso creme brûlée was heaven, I finished it less than 3 bites. Oh, it was so velvety smooth and rich.

Showcase Retaurant

Tucked away in Coal Harbour, Marriott Pinnacle Downtown Hotel. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. My friends and I decided to walk over to Showcase Restaurant & Bar, for a chilled night out.

Entrées..

Seared Sturgeon with Fresh Pappardelle, preserved lemon, fennel broth, bok choy. It was bland and so overcooked the texture of the fish was chewy.

TheQueen Charlotte Island Halibut with zucchini, fennel, tomato, fresh basil, lemon. This was also really overcooked but, at least the flavour was there.

The Prime Rib, was thoroughly impressive. The rib was cooked just the way we love it medium rare, juice, succulent oh so good. For $22 for a starter and rib how you can pass it up. We split it between the two of us and were so full we had to pack some of it.

The beef tenderloin with cauliflower purée, blue cheese, asparagus, fingerling potato – $28. The beef tenderloin was nicely cooked but, lacked the wow factor. That being said, we all agreed this dish was over priced for something so average.

Dessert

We ordered the Local Artisan Cheeses with apple compote, candied walnuts, medjool dates. No one can really screw up on a cheese platter, it was pretty good.

Chocolate Caramel Parfait Chocolate Mousse caramel, vanilla toffee ice cream. This was too sweet for my tastes but, the texture of the mousse was perfect.

Odoul’s Menu

For my little 2 year old neice’s birthday we decided onO’Doul’s Restaurant & Bar, part of Listel hotel with its rich and dark decor and live jazz music. We got seated in their private dining room.

Happy Birthday Paige-gu

Now the food…

Amusebouche– strawberry jelly, Carpaccio. jelly not sweet. It was definitely creative, I could not decide whether I liked it or not, my buds were too confused.

Dungeness Crab and Pacific Shrimp Cake – $14, pea shoots, celeriac and apple remoulade, mustard caper pure. We loved it; it had larger pieces of crab and shrimp.

Cortes Island Mussel & Frites – $13, Storm Scottish cream ale, tomatoes, leeks, shallots, pomme paille. This was disappointing, the texture of the mussels were rubbery, as if it was previously frozen. This was a full-fledged sodium attack, after a few bites it got bitter.

One of their most popular menu item, rack of lamb – $34, garlic and Dijon herb crust, potato and yam gratin, seasonal vegetables, natural lamb jus. Mustard rub great but, for that price I have had a lot better at a lower price.

Dry-aged Certified Angus Bone-in Rib Eye -$39, roast Pemberton potatoes, shallot “marmalade”, seasonal vegetables, peppercorn sauce. This was huge! I had to share it with one other person and we still ended up taking ¾ of it home.

Although I realize rib eye’s are quite marbled but, it was too fatty for my taste.

Service…

Granted it was a large table and several dishes were ordered multiple times everyone’s left over got jumbled up. We had a hunch that would occur so luckily everyone did a quick switch. Overall the experience was pleasurable. Would I go back? Probably for the rib-eye which I would then split into 3. In comparison to other Hotel restaurants, Showcase at the Marriott Hotel, Prestons at Coast Coal Harbour Hotel, Griffin’s Restaurant at Fairmont Vancouver, Herons at Fairmont Waterfront and, finally the last of downtown Vancouver’s Fairmont’s, Lobby Lounge at Pacific Rim, this was one of the better options.

Preston – Why Empty Restaurants are Creepy

Preston, is a little piece of Yaletown in Coal Harbour. With its dark wood and black on red decor. Peering from the outside it looks pretty dead, going to an empty restaurant could be pretty creepy. I walk by this place daily and always make a mental note to try it but, always get creeped out when it’s completely empty. Thankfully, on a Saturday night it was half full, whew…

We decided on the Saturday Date Night menu, $49 shared appetizer and desert and, seperate entrees.

Appies

Started with the Sweet Prawn Gyoza and Scallops – Dumplings were nice and crispy. I wouldn’t say it was brilliant but, it was above average.

Entrees

Wild Mushroom Ravioli – Wow, it was so dry and undercooked it was like eating tree bark dipped in sweet and sour sauce. The flavors did not complement each other. The combinations of flavors were so odd, we were left feeling confused, what the hell am I really eating, sweet and sour, with wild mushrooms?!?

In replacement of the sweet and sour tree bark ravioli, we ordered the Pad Thai. It was a bit bland but, certainly passable. My dining companion mixed in some soy sauce and chili paste to the leftovers the next day and apparently, that was good.

AAA top sirloin – The meat was tender and juicy, albeit very salty. I’m guessing they accidentally dumped too much salt on the steak, so much so I could still see little chunks of crystals that I had to scrape off.

Strawberry Balsamic Cheesecake – I love strawberry cheese cakes with sweet balsamic reduction.

The service was exemplary, the hostess came around to each table and asked, using your name, and extra added customer service touch was pleasant and saved the dinner from being a complete failure.
