Hawksworth Young Chef Scholarship Competition – Oct 27

Hawksworth Restaurant Announces the Inaugural
Hawksworth Young Chef Scholarship
$10,000 prize for the future star of Canada’s culinary scene

Hawksworth Restaurant is proud to announce the inaugural Hawksworth Young Chef Scholarship competition. Ten future culinary stars from across Canada have the chance to win a life-changing grand prize and the opportunity to showcase their skills to Canada’s most revered chefs and critics.

The Hawksworth Young Chef Scholarship program is a non-profit culinary foundation created to provide a platform for talented young Canadian chefs to get a head start in their career. The winner of the inaugural 2013 Hawksworth Young Chef Scholarship will receive a $10,000 bursary and a stage at a top international restaurant – giving them the inspiration and opportunity needed to develop their professional skills.
Judges include Chef Mark McEwan, star of Top Chef Canada, award-winning food author Jacob Richler, Corporate Executive Chef of Oliver & Bonacini Restaurants Chef Anthony Walsh and Co-Owner of CHARCUT Roast House, Chef Connie DeSousa. Vancouver-based celebrity Chef Vikram Vij, Hawksworth Restaurant’s Chef de Cuisine Kristian Eligh and Chef David Hawksworth himself will be representing the West Coast on the judging panel. A Quebec judge will be confirmed shortly.
“The three finalists will have the privilege of being judged by a panel of top Canadian chefs and critics who, using their years of experience, will provide constructive criticism and advice for the young talent, rounding out their experience in the competition,” says Chef David Hawksworth. “This will assist the winner in developing their professional skillset and will undoubtedly place them at the forefront of the culinary industry; allowing them to secure positions in reputable Canadian or internationally recognized restaurants.”
“Each quality chef is connected to another quality chef and this competition is a unique opportunity to interact with experienced chefs, be inspired and set young chefs on the path to excellence,” says Toronto’s Chef Mark McEwan.
The competition is open to Red Seal Canadian chefs who are under 28 years of age and are currently working full-time with a professional kitchen. Ten selected finalists will gather for the inaugural Hawksworth Young Chef Scholarship competition at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts in Vancouver on Sunday October 27th 2013. Applications are accepted online and applicants must submit a recipe using provided ingredients – rules and more information are available on the official website www.hawksworthscholarship.com.

Note to editors: Closing the competition, a fundraising dinner will be held on the evening of Sunday October 27th 2013 – Chef David Hawksworth, Chef Kristian Eligh and fellow judges Chef Connie DeSousa, Chef Mark McEwan, Chef Vikram Vij and Chef Anthony Walsh will each be creating a course for this unique event that showcases the best of Canadian culinary talent. The Les Dames d’Escoffier Dine Around – Aug 14

It’s one of the most fun and best value culinary fundraisers of the year. The Les Dames d’Escoffier Dine Around.  Over twenty restaurants, vineyards, gardens and cooking schools from Vancouver to Whistler, Victoria to Kelowna, North Vancouver to White Rock each donating one “table” for a concurrent dinner party. Same night. Same time. Same price. Just $69 per person including wine.  You choose the restaurant. We choose the menu and the wine.

Each restaurant is priced exactly the same, with each restaurant donating the food menu and table and a winery donating the wine. Gratuity is not included. Restaurants have designed their menu to highlight their own cuisine, so please note this is a night to celebrate food and although health related allergies will be taken into consideration, the menus are set so no special requests can be accommodated.

Your table may be in the dining room or it may be in a very special location like the kitchen or wine room. For those locations offering an outdoor dining experience, particularly in the form of a “picnic” dinner, guests will be informed so as to dress appropriately.

Choose a new restaurant or one of your favourites. Buy a couple of seats at the table, or take the entire table. Some venues have donated 4 seats, some 6, some 8. Each restaurant is priced exactly the same. Les dames members Sea Cider and Spierhead Winery are just some of the wineries joining us this year.

Dame Dinner of a Lifetime

Both restaurant and winery are donating 100% of the food, service and wine, so all proceeds from the dinners will be donated to Les Dames d’Escoffier, BC Chapter, for scholarship and outreach funding. We kindly ask therefore that you do tip your server.

Additionally, a gourmet raffle will be held featuring select Les Dames d’Escoffier member products such as a $100 Shaughnessy Restaurant at Van Dusen dining gift certificate, gourmet baskets, cookbooks and cooking classes from the Dirty Apron Cooking School with tickets drawn that night both online and live at an after party at the Hamilton Street Grill in Yaletown. All dames, chefs, restaurateurs and guests are invited!

Come back and visit this page for raffle ticket sales and additional restaurants.

Vancouver Food Bank Fundraiser – Lunch and Produce by Donation

This day started all wrong. Everything that could go wrong or be broken did. I was so jacked on adrenaline because I was so pissed off before I even headed out my door. So I shimmed into my hottest dressed, brushed my hair and dolled myself up, to try to make myself feel better.

On the way to work I heard music coming from the art gallery. I saw colourful tents, I was already late for work, so I decided to check it out

Vancouver Food Bank Fundraiser - Organic produce

It was Vancouver Food Bank’s annual Thanksgiving fundraiser. This year’s theme is organics, breakfast, lunch produce by donation. With so many happy faces I was soon smiling too. It felt good to do something great and meaningful.
