On the Menu Today at Faubourg New Bakery

Faubourg Signage

Faubourg second location just opened yesterday.  I am just dying for more bakeries downtown Vancouver. Located right beside Artigiano’s coffee on Hornby. It’s a quant place to chill-out after dinner, it’s relaxing and the décor features two gorgeous chandeliers right underneath a communal table.

With a decent pastry selection, I choose the croissant, lemon tart and almond twist pastry.

The croissant dough is yeast-risen, apparently this enhances the flavor. It was fairly light and flaky, the only con, was that it could have been more flakier, felt like it’s been sitting there a while. The bottom was a denser than I liked.

The lemon tart was one of my favourite from Faubourg’s first location, so I had to reorder it.

The almond twist pastry, not what it was called was the better pastry of the two, this was not too sweet, super flaky with the right amount of chewiness from the honey. Sooo good.

Blue Water Cafe – Finger Licking Desserts

No more second guessing where to go for late night desserts. I just uncovered a great place, Blue Water Cafe, a seafood restaurant with finger-licking desserts.

An hour after our rather large and fattening dinner, my friends and I decided what the hey? Let’s go for oysters and desserts.  After what seemed like hours of hmmms… and, “where do you wanna go?, “I don’t care, you are the food blogger, you recommend”, I decided on Blue Water Cafe.

The service was impeccable and the atmosphere was relaxing and inviting. A place where you can comfortably sit for hours without being rushed out the door.

We ordered a dozen oysters between the four of us which were devoured in less than 2 minutes. I was so excited that I forgot to snap a photo.

Jean Pierre Sanchez, resident Pastry Chef plated inspiring delectable desserts.  His name threw me off, so I had to ask. He grew up in France and I believe his father is Spanish.

Warm Dark Cuban Chocolate Cake brandy truffle center, vanilla bean ice cream 12.50. Think of molten chocolate lava cakes, where the center is filled with luscious, warm, oozing chocolate. I couldn’t taste the brandy. Admittedly, I inhaled this and might have not taken the time to savour the flavours. It barely touched the spoon before I gobbled it up.

Lemon Grass Creme Brulee carrot cake, papaya salsa yoghurt, ginger sorbet 11.50. This was my favourite out of the bunch, the flavors had the ‘in your face’ kind of intensity. I love lemongrass so this was awesome. Seared to perfection, very often the sugar is over caramelized resulting in the burnt taste. This was perfect.

Lemon Grass Creme Brulee

Lemon Meringue Tartelette rhubarb orange compote, pistachio ice cream 11.50. This was very citrusy and refreshing. It went superb with the rhubarb and orange compote. The pistachio ice cream gave the tart dessert a smooth finish.

Kalamansi  Cheesecake roasted strawberries with sweet basil strawberry tellicherry pepper sorbet 11.00. See that dessert way in the back right corner, that’s the cheesecake. My friends dug into it before I could smack their spoons away and snap a close-up. The cheesecake was light, almost airy.

Blue water desserts

It is on the expensive side but it is well worth it. Also because my friend snuck a spoonful of their treasured artichoke vinaigrette preserve, who know how much that costs.

Jean Philippe Patisserie – Chocolate Porn At It’s Best

Vegas to me, is about partying, sleepless nights and food, great food.

Jean Philippe Patisserie located inside Aria Hotel in Las Vegas, is all about bright colors. It’s food porn at it’s best. We began salivating just looking at the desserts. Everything was visually stunning.

The chocolate dragon and cherry blossoms display is a masterpiece.  I wanted to go inside the display and frolic.

You ready for some food porn?

I’ll start with the savory, the sandwiches although I did not get to try it, was very popular amongst the tourists.

Chocolates, Chocolates and MORE CHOCOLATES

I’d say it beats Thomas Haas chocolates and you can forget about Thierry. One bite, and I was giddy from a choco-gasim. I had about 5, I was sooo happy.  The flavor was intense. I don’t remember which ones I ate but, I clearly remember how I felt. It might have been because I was semi-awake and running on adrenaline, or because I was so dehydrated but, these were the best chocolates I’ve ever had. My euphoria lasted for about an hour.

Bel Cafe – Has Maple Bacon Macarons

Just came back from Bel Cafe, part of the Georgia Hotel and Hawksworth Restaurant, I just had the best Maple Bacon Macaron.

I love almost everything bacon, Voeges Chocolate bacon bar, Bella Gellateria’s maple bacon ice cream, Pirate Radio’s maple bacon latte. When I spotted the maple bacon macaron at Bel Cafe I just had to try it.

It was so soft and not at all too sweet. I love it!

Following the macaron, I delved into a White Chocolate and Coconut Cake.

By now I was sugar high. It was good though.

Soirette – Macrons & Tea

Soirette is a new Macrons & Tea café in Coal Harbour. Stepping into the cafe, everything looks so pretty, almost too pretty to eat. Alas, my stomach won out.

One very positive selling feature is their creative variations of macrons. Ranging from Lavender, never was a big fan of eating lavender, it always reminded me of detergent. Matcha, malibu, lemon, raspberry, pistachio, caramel fleur de sel, passion fruit and etc.

Rose Macrons
Rose Macrons

We decided on half a dozen:
Matcha , rose, malibu, white truffle,  casis, pistachio. My favourite was the savory white truffle macroons. Geesh.. I wanted to stretch that piece of goodness, so I ate with tiny nibbles and rolled my eyes at every bite. The truffle intensity was so powerful without becoming overwhelming. My second choice would have to be the rose macarons, light sweet flora.

They also sell a tiny selection of cakes, I didn’t get to try them though.

Before Soirette we hit up Thierry for their macrons and lemon tart (my favourite pastry at Thierry, just the right amount of lemon, amazing!). Thierry was reputed to have the best macrons in Vancouver. While Thierry’s selection is very limited, the quality of the macrons was a tad bit better than Soirette. The texture of Thierry’s macrons was perfect.

Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt – My New Obsession

I’ve recently became obsessed with Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt on Cambie,  a self-serve frozen yogurt bar.

Menchies frozen yogurt

First you choose and sample from a selection of yogurt, they do vary by day. The setup reminded me of 7-11’s slurpee machines. Don’t go too crazy on the samples, while I understand that it’s self serve refrain from being greedy, like the cheap skate I saw who collected samples of each flavor for everyone at his table. I don’t even think he purchased anything!! Flavours that day ranged from Strawberry Tart, Coffee, Triple Chocolate, Key Lime Pie, Red Velvet Cake and original.

Yogurt Bar Selection

You move down to choose from a huge selection of toppings, from chocolate, gummy bears, nuts, fruits, mocha, lychee, oreo’s. You name it, they probably have it.

Lastly, you choose the syrup. I decided to forgo this, I had enough candies piled in my cup to give me a sugar high to last me for at least half a day.

They charge by weight. Not sure how Menchie’s compares to others in terms of price ie Qoola and Pink Berry but, you sure do get a lot more variety of toppings. As for the yogurt itself, the quality of the yogurt is a tad bit better at Pink Berry but, it’s also a lot pricier and, you only get 2 toppings. My frozen yogurt cost me $3, how can you not be happy?

Walking out of the store with a cup full of goodness, who wouldn’t be jealous? I kept on getting hungry stare downs. Didn’t care, I was already on a high.
