Society

Hail to the yuppies who frequent this spot and made it a Yaletown hotspot. The menu is a carbon copy of the typical Milestones and Cactus, reeking of mediocrity and, void of any creativity. On the upside the people are good looking.

Admittedly, this post was based on their dine out menu which deviates from the regular fare. However, I sometimes have the urge to people watch, I have frequented Society more than a few times and every time I order food the above critique usually rings true.

Now the Food..

Starters

Split Pea Soup – smoked ham hock, crème fraiche. Overly salty to the point of bitter.

Pea Soup

Pickled Beet Salad – chive and sour cream dressing, watercress, goat’s grilled cheese. Very stingy on the cheese, that you could barely taste it. The dressing was so sour that it became overpowering.

Beet Salad

Mains

Truffle Salisbury Steak -garlic mashed potatoes, pearl onion jus. Basically, a hamburger patty juiced up with garlic, mushrooms and onions.

Salisbury Steak

Ahi Tuna Casserole – ahi tuna, mushrooms, diced celery and peas, four cheese sauce. I admittedly not a huge fan of mac n cheese, unless it’s damn good, I probably won’t like it. This rang true for this dish, it was creamy but, it’s mac n cheese and not much else.

Salisbury Steak

Home-made Butternut Squash Perogies – roasted butternut squash filling, wild mushrooms, sour cream, wild boar bacon. My fave dish of the night. It was nicely browned and crispy. May be it was my love affair with bacon but it was delicious.

Desserts

The Way dark chocolate cake – butter cream filling, vanilla gelato. It tasted like food court dessert, suffice to say a whopping disappointment.

Comfortably perched at Salsa Agave’s bar, I watch the gloomy quarter sized rain drops pelt down on unusually quiet Saturday afternoon. What could perk us up more than a refreshing, fruity cocktail that makes us reminisce of our lazy summer days on Kitsilano Beach. Strawberry  Rush cocktail, mixed with guava juice, at least 2 oz of vodka, soda and, freshly muddled strawberries.

Soft corn tortillas $2.25 each or 4 for $8. A recommend for it’s great value.

Fave beef tongue, tender, lacked a bit of salt but, delicious.

Next recommendation, Chorizo, mexican sausage, this was delicious. Unlike it’s competitor restaurant Don Guacamole’s which were dry and chewy, this was delicious.

The chicken and beef tortillas were good but, nothing special.

Menudo, beef tripe in a spicy broth with sides of onions, oregano and lime -$9. Our adorable and hot server suggested mixing the sides in the broth and let it sit for a few minutes so all the flavors can meld together.

Commune Cafe Dinner Menu

Perhaps it was the adoration of the chic open space concept, or the sustainable and organic ingredients, I wanted it to succeed. For the chicness of the space, we were hoping for creative sizzling dishes, alas the food was too simple, lacking depth of flavour.

It is a great casual place to relax with friends and sip on drinks, their liquor selection is quite decent. The large covered and heated patio is a sweet spot for yaletown people watching, as I write this a muscle man wearing a T-shirt 5x’s too small walks by with his rat looking poodle.

Started out with Baba ghanoush and Flat bread -$6. In terms of value I recommend this dish similar to their hummus. Baba ghanoush, is an roasted egg plant dip, this lacked any flavour. It tasted like I was eating olive oil and boiled eggplant. The Iranian flat bread with sesame was light and crispy.

Followed by the Portobello and Goats cheese sangak Iranian flatbread -$12, only available on their dinner menu which starts at 5PM. The flat bread was soggy, the flavours was too simple, it didn’t give me a buzz and have me guessing “hmm..what other ingredients are in here other than the portobello and goat cheese?”

Finishing with the Butter Tart -$2, the pastry was not light or flaky and the filling was missing yet again another layer of flavour.

I love the idea of painting while sipping on wine! Although my “masterpiece” turned out to be so horrendous I felt a little self-conscious walking back home with it. To my credit, considering the few glasses of wine that was consumed I believe you can make out my building in my”semi-abstract version of Vancouver’s cityline” .

The canvas’s range in sizes and prices, the smallest 24 x 18″ at $40, 65 to $105 for the largest. They provide a smock to protect your clothes and you get a plethora of paint colors and brushes to choose from.

Atmosphere:

ART_Grafitti

Gastown bohemian artists meets yaletown yuppies meets . Peaking underneath their paint smock you see designer dress shirts, it’s in the entertainment center in Yaletown, what do you expect?! Seems to be a hotspot for dates, many couples and first dates. The service was friendly no “what the hell is that?” Although, I got plenty of that from my friends. No worries, unlike some mistakes you can cover it with WHITE PAINT!

Each month they schedule a few local artists to add the eclectic bohemian vibe.

Food:

The grilled cheese sandwich $10, it was sub-par, not one of their strengths.  Cheese merchant’s lunch $15 for a combo of 3 meats and or cheeses and 3 condiments, I’ve had better at many other small plates restaurants in Vancouver. Unfortunately, food is an art form they could not master, this is more of a fun and lighthearted post-dinner kind of place. They have quite a list of quality teas and a simple and small list of wines to choose from.
